What do you remember?

I have lived away from Manhattan for close to eighteen years after spending my first eighteen years in Manhattan. I enjoyed lots of crazy things about our fine town.... and thinking about things I miss...... Pyramid Pizza, Swan-ies back door, strawberry picking at the church farm (covered in sticky yuck and dirt), also building forts in the corn at the church farm after getting board with picking, I also miss the the millions of frogs that make noise at night and road bumps, watching softball or baseball at Cico park on hot summer nights, the excitement of going to swim at city park or camp at tuttle creek, scaring myself by watching the water at the tubes, the playground behind the church, arts in the park movies/plays/concerts, skinny dipping at timber-creek, racing from seminary to the high school, freezing at football games, the sound of frogs and locus on hot summer nights and catching fireflies and smearing their guts on my siblings. When you remember growing up in Manhattan what were your favorite memories?

I remember trying to make it to Aggieville and back for lunch!

It's weird to admit that I miss the rain...since I live in the northwest. But I really miss the Kansas thunderstorms.

I found this site while blog surfing and what a wonderful find. I haven’t visited Manhattan for over 5 years, and seeing all those photos certainly evokes nostalgia. I identify with most everything on your list. Which brings me to a very fond memory, Thanksgiving with the Bradshaws. I really miss Sister Bradshaw’s plethora of pies.

Speaking of Kansas storms, I kind of miss navigating the mildly hilly and curved streets of Manhattan during those icy slush storms. It was an art. The church parking lot was a great place to do donuts on such days. As a kid I loved getting out of school when it was so cold they couldn’t get the buses started. I’m not much for cold, but I loved getting out of school. We just moved to Knoxville so now I’m back in a hilly college town that gets a bit cold, maybe I’ll feel at home.

I’d love to hear from other Manhattanites and how they’re doing. My emails are neilcoleman @ hotmail.com or ncolemanmd @ gmail.com.
