Stars & Stripes

Happy late 4th of July!! It has become the custom for the Powells to get together over the 4th.

Cherece & I both live in Tucson, AZ---& we are super zealous about leaving the state this time of year! Why? It is HOT.

We've been heading north on an annual basis for yrs.

We congregate at my grandpa's house in Kimberly, Idaho. Erick lives near there in Twin Falls, Idaho.

This year my parents couldn't make it (sadness!)

For those of you who don't know, Kaye & Morgan are otherwise occupied serving a mission within their stake boundaries (dad is the branch president in Concordia, KS.)

Kammi also opted out this year, since my parents were awol.

Cherece & I were still as motivated as ever to 'get the heck out of dodge'. Our husbands were too, since they are both pyromaniacs & it is illegal to shoot off your own fireworks in AZ due to fire hazard.

It was a splendid trip. My 90 year old grandpa opted out of going to the parade in Rupert, claiming he had to "take a nap"....lo & behold he mowed the lawn while we were out. Now you know where my mom gets her energy!! She is a chip off the ol' block!

My grandpa's garden is AMAZING!

It puts the rest of us to shame! Not only does he grow his own produce---he supplies the neighbors!

In case it isn't obvious to you, Erick's wife, Marnae, is 8 months prego with #4. They will have 4 kiddos under the age of 5.

The new addition due to arrive in August is another girl. So their oldest, Carter, will have to hold his own with a lot of estrogen in the house. Erick has had some experience with that, so I'm sure he'll be able to talk the tyke through it.

The Smith Family Game

Lyric had me try and find all of her siblings in this picture, I picked them all out... but naming them was a whole different story. So, Starting with Brother Smith and moving clockwise, try and list as many Smith siblings as you can! (Note: One Smith sibling is missing from this photo... try and guess who.) To enlarge the photo click on it.

Fair Warning

We want to give everyone a chance to do a post! If you are a link then we will contact you...if you don't have a blog this will be your chance to post pictures and update us!

Pie Night!

Growing up Bradshaw has left me with a lot of demons. None greater than the enormous pressure to produce 15-20 pies for Thanksgiving. I remember one Thanksgiving after college and husband number one, I was invited to my friend Jen's house for Thanksgiving. I felt the need to bring something....a pie. Oh...no not one pie, three pies later and plenty of time spent deciding what would give the perfect variety I came only wishing I had brought three more. Because in addition to the fun involved in making the pies also comes the fun of eating the pies. But more fun than making and eating is the games and good times that come with Thanksgiving and PIE! So in trying to think of the perfect Manhattan Connection November post, it hit me! PIE NIGHT is my favorite memory about Thanksgiving and it involves many of the people that are linked on the left!

The History of PIE Night!
Well it all started when my mother, Sally J, came up with the idea of making each of her children there own individual pie. Near the first part of November, she would begin taking orders and researching recipes. Some of the siblings stuck with one type of pie and never deviated while others tried a new pie regularly. Others were left to sneak into the kitchen at night and sampled pies of others siblings (Liz, David, and Matt please fess up...we are adults now, the truth can come out). My mother in addition to the nine pies she was making for siblings also made a few variations of apple even if no one requested then. Then she had her favorites that over the years through her research she discovered and never being able to discard would make as extra for fun. Suddenly, we had pies coming out our ears. Then came the idea of inviting friends over for pie and games and then PIE NIGHT was invented. Which was secretly a way for my mother to continue her research on pleasing pies.
